Bottle Cap Mural: COMPLETE!!!!!!

I arrived at school before 7 this morning so I could "install" the mural before the Mayor came.  My amazing friend who cut & base coated the wood also drilled holes along the sides of each board.  I was able to wire the panels together once I leveled them out in the mulch.  The response to the project was AMAZING & IMMEDIATE !!  As I was wiring it together.... people slowed down & yelled out their car windows telling me how awesome it looked.  I had students & parents coming to take pictures before I was even finished! Our school secretary snap a picture with her iPhone and uploaded it to Facebook before she stepped foot in the school.   I hope that it can stand up to the weather & children(I have a fear of kids picking the lids off!).  I have plans for bottle cap murals inside the school too....but it is going to be awhile before I can replenish the supply!

  1. WOW! This is awesome. How did you attach the bottlecaps so they can withstand the weather? I am collecting for one at my school, but haven't quite figured out the logistics of it.
Love that you turned it into a 3D piece too!!

  6. Hello Mr. E! I discovered your site and am hooked! Thanks for all your wonderful ideas and links to others with much of the same! I am a verteran middle school 3-d art teacher recently thrust into the world of elementary art! (insert blood-curdling scream here!) I have so many questions, but one that I am currently working on is quick, orderly clean-up of painting materials with K-1. Any thought would be appreciated!

  7. Hi - I love your mural! I was just wondering how the plastic is weathering and if the colors are fading greatly due to UV rays.

  8. @ZEA- I will try to do a post on the mural 4 months after I've put it up so everyone can see. Colors are pretty good...some have faded a bit, but most still really great. Have had some fall off..had to reattach about 30. Most stupid Mr. E stuff...but will post that too :) ha ha GREAT QUESTION!

  9. My community is collecting caps for a similar project, and I'm curious: is the mural still standing? If so, how are the caps weathering?

    1. K. Dawn - Thanks for stopping by!! I had it outside for about 9 months. I brought it in for a few reasons...it was summer break(was kind of afraid kids in the neighborhood would pick it apart)...it had faded a good bit(oranges mostly)....and many caps had fallen off(however..this was because dumb dumb here did not take stickers off of lids...and they moister caused the sticker to separate from the adhesive!!!!!!). I think the fading and falling off could have been helped if I would have put a coat of polyurethane on it. AT LEAST..that is what I'll try next time around to see if it helps!!!
