Mr. E Asks 3: Debbie Diesen (The Pout-Pout Fish)

...OUT JUNE 24...

I hope you all know the joy that is THE POUT POUT FISH!  My students love these books!!!!  Several years ago Debbie Diesen, the author of The Pout Pout Fish, commented on my blog after I had used her book as inspiration for a lesson.  I so appreciated her taking the time to comment....love that she has that kind of connection with her audience!!  Well, I contacted her to see if she would want to be part of Mr. E Asks 3....and she shared that The Pout Pout Fish had another adventure about to take place!!  The Pout Pout Fish Goes to School!!!   I love this...because my oldest daughter will be going to kindergarten this fall, and I can see her connecting with this story!!!  Ok..enough of me going on and on....

I HOPE YOU ENJOY MR. E ASKS 3: Debbie Diesen!!!
(OH...and read all the way to the bottom of the post for something extra fun!)

Do you have a favorite place to "create" your stories?
If so where is it & why?

Ideally, I love to be outside when I’m writing, though that’s not always

practical here in Michigan.  But regardless of where I am, I prefer to have

a pen or pencil in hand when I’m writing.  I do use the computer later,

after I have a complete first draft, but pretty much everything I write

starts out handwritten.  Having a pen in my hand helps me tap into the

writing part of my mind.

Were you involved in the arts as a child/teenager?

I loved to write when I was young, and I was very lucky to have parents,

teachers, and school librarians who encouraged me in my writing.  I was

pretty shy and timid back then (something I haven’t yet entirely outgrown!),

but the encouragement I received in those early years gave me confidence in
myself as a writer, then and now.  I am very grateful!

When you first wrote the Pout Pout Fish,

did you know his story was going to continue?

When I first wrote the story, I didn’t know Mr. Fish would have more
adventures.  And in fact, I didn’t even know he’d ever see Miss Shimmer
again!  At the time, I imagined the life-changing kiss of the first book to

be a Random Act of Smoochiness.  But after Dan Hanna’s delightful art

brought Mr. Fish and his friends to life, it became clear that Mr. Fish had

more stories to tell.  It has been a joy beyond measure to create and share

those stories with children!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE A SET OF
THE POUT POUT FISH BOOKS?

Leave a comment with a 2 or 3 sentence description of a fish lesson you use in your classroom!  I'll draw a name from those who do this...and the winner will receive a complete set of The Pout Pout Fish Books!  Please "Like" Art With Mr. E on Facebook & "Follow" me on Twitter to see if your name is selected!!!

Helping Out An Amazing Art Teacher

Do you use TeacherTube at all??  If you do...and you have searched art videos...I'm sure you have come across Be Kind To Your Eraser!!  Mrs. Fuglestad is the amazing master mind behind this & many other videos.  She is kind of a Rock Star in the art teacher world(in my opinion).  Anyways...I recently crossed paths with her online, and she asked me if I could help out with a contest that could bless their school with a nice chunk of change.

Take a moment and vote!!!!!! Here is all the information you will need.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

One of our Fugleflicks (student created art related movies) is a finalist in the National Geographic Find Your Footprint contest.
We're trying to win a $36K prize package for our school and we need votes.

There is no login or email sharing or anything time consuming.

All you do is click vote for "Let's Be Green When its Time to Clean"

Results from the Trash Art Contest

Results from the Art Contest: Unfortunately my girls did not win the Beautification Art Contest sponsered by Metro Public Works (..though I thought they should have!!!). However, they did get their art placed on the side of two trush trucks.....and the art-on-wheels will be rolling around Nashville for the next 6 months!!! Congraduation girls...I THINK YOU'RE BOTH AWESOME ARTISTS & IT IS A JOY TO BE YOUR ART TEACHER!!!!!!!!!! I'M GOING TO MISS BOTH THE GIRLS NEXT YEAR WHEN THEY GO ON TO MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!

The first picture is of Rowan's work. She did such an amazing job!!! Rowan is my fun artsy student, and I can always count on her to think outside the box!! The middle picture is Rowan & I in front of the trash truck that has her art on the side....I'm a proud art papa! The last picture is Rowan with Mayor Karl Dean in front of LP Fields(the home of the Tennessee Titans!!!)....HOW COOL IS THAT!!!!

The first picture is Kira's beautiful art work. She has been such a consistantly good artist over the years...and one of the most pleasant students I've ever worked with! The second picture is of Kira & I in front of the trash truck that has her art work on it(I look like a giant beside her!! ha ha)....once again...I can't help but be proud of my kiddo!!!
* I asked the parents of both girls if I could use their name & pictures in my blog. THIS IS A MUST IF YOU ARE GOING TO POST PHOTOS OF YOUR STUDENTS!!!!!

Art Contests

I am not a contest kind of teacher. They often have no real connection to our curriculum & standards, and I do not have the time in my schedule to participate in such things. Sometimes though...a contest comes along that is worth my time & my students time to participate. This year I have submitted two amazing pieces to the Beautification Art Contest sponsered by Metro Public Works. The theme this year is PUT WASTE IN ITS PLACE: KEEP NASHVILLE BEAUTIFUL! I had some amazing pieces turned in by other students(thank you Micah, Joshua,Saige, Alison, and Samuel), but I could only pick two to move on to the next phase of the contest. I think Rowan & Kira have a great chance of winning! If they do win....the entries will be depicted on the sides of the Red River Waste Collection trucks for the next six months! That means over 9,000 people a day could be seeing their work!! Also, if the girls were to win...my art program would recieve money(amount depends on what place they recieved). HOW WONDERFUL WOULD THAT BE!! I told the kids that they could set down and help me pick out some items for the art room if they have the winning entry! CROSS YOUR FINGERS!!!
