Artober Nashville: Inspired by Cassidy Cole

This year Cassidy Cole is our focus artist for Artober Nashville!  She was at our inservice at the start of the school year, and I thought she & her work were just delightful.  I feel that the style & content she creates is very exciting for students to see/learn about.  Plus, it is wonderful for them to see a young female artist that is local!

I'm using some ideas that Cassidy shares in her video to guide the art work.  I talk to the students about the differences between creating an object & being inspired by an object, expressive color, nonobjective art, and unusual art tools.  I provide the students with RED, BLUE, or YELLOW(Even if they aren't the TRUE primary colors), a paper towel, and a popsicle stick. Review color mixing, ways to use the popsicle stick to apply the paint, and how to clean it off between colors in order to not create a whole lot of brown.  Then I let them go!  They have LOVED IT!!!  I love the variety/individuality of the works.  SO MUCH FUN!  Next class time I'll allow them to use oil pastel to add some structural lines to finish the work.    (The art images are student work from Kindergarten & 3rd Grade)

ARTOBER NASHVILLE: Elementary Literature Focus

This year the elementary art teachers were encouraged to use literature as a jumping off point for their Artober Nashville project(s).  I used Swimmy by Leo Lionni.  In the story collaboration saves the day when the school of fish worked together.  I thought that was a great idea to translate to the whole school working together to make a beautiful instillation piece!!
Here is the ArtoberNashville board I made as you enter our school!  There isn't a "set" theme...I just made up the Go Deep With The Arts.  I thought it was fitting for the fishy theme!!

If you don't have the book Swimmy for your classroom...GET IT!  I love many of Leo Lionni's books for the art room.  Great inspiration/jumping off points!!  I had the students use a tracer to create the fish so they were the same size. I made them double sided..so I had to have them almost the same.

I often get wild ideas, but am not 100% sure how to accomplish them.  I originally thought about individually hanging each fish on a rod or something and then placing that in the ceiling tiles.  I quickly realized that was not going to work for MANY MANY REASONS!!  I ended up going back to my old friend, wire hangers, to hot glue the fish to & then hang it from the ceiling tile braces.

Where would I be without wire  hangers and hot glue?!!?!?

These are only a handful...I have 16 "schools" of fish
hanging in the lobby of our school!!
BAM! IMPACT!

AN IDEA FOR ARTOBER

There is not an official theme for ARTOBER, but here is an idea for you to consider.  I know most of us elementary art teachers love a good theme...so here is an idea you might want to use!

Season of Change

Last year I received a Facebook message about old security fences at a condo that were being thrown away...."If anyone could make something out of them...it's you!"  Without clear direction...I said yes.  Quickly the Kandinsky Fence project came together.  It was a true collaboration between students, parents, faculty, and other community members.  It turned out beautiful.  I learned A LOT! (like what primer & paint to use...well...more like what NOT to use).  When it got blown down after tornado/straight-line winds...instead of being the end...it was new life(the person that put it back together again for me REALLY secured it).  I noticed at the end of last year...it was starting to look a little rough.  As much as I hated seeing the Kandinsky Fence go...it was a chance for something new!

I went to a local paint place...and they sold me a gallon of high quality exterior "oops" paint for  $4!!  It was an off white...which was a perfect "primer".  I then went to home depot and purchased their sample size paints.  You can get a nice amount of high quality paint for an affordable price!  Total..I spent less than $40 to give new life to the Fence Project.

I decided to allow my 4th graders to be the inspiration & the workers.  I used their 4 Seasons project to be the inspiration for the sides.  I took reoccurring elements for their pictures as the inspiration.  I then decided I'd have each of my 4th grade classes come out side to paint for the first 15 min(or so) of their class time to paint.  As soon as the got into my room I had them get their art shirts.  I then passed out the pre-poured paint with brushes already in the cups ( with time crunch..and trying to have 20+ students paint at the same time...you have to be organized).  I then directed students to where they needed to go & what they needed to be painting.  Sometimes it worked...and sometimes there was Day 2?!?!?!?!?!?!

Day 2 was a nightmare.  A couple of the boys decided it would be a good idea to paint on students' backs while they were painting.  They were amazingly skilled at this...because there were 4 adults supervising...and not one of us caught them(my practicum students were there that day).  We did not know what happened till the end of class when I had the students throw their art shirts in the bucket & clean up.  I saw red paint on the back of chairs...and on the back of students!!!  There was red paint on students actual shirts...but thankfully no parents got too mad.  And the boys...they were dealt with!!  I will say this...at least they admitted it!

Day 3 was much better, and things started really coming along!  I started receiving many comments from parents & staff...saying that they really liked the new design!! (They had loved the Kandinsky Fence...and many of them had worked on it.  A great teachable moment on temporary art installations! ha ha)

I could see the end!!  The project was very close to being finished..with only a few mishaps!  I knew that the next class would be able to finish it up!!  Then it rained....and rained and rained and rained and rained!  For over a week we had off and on showers...high humidity...and there was no way we could paint.  UGH!

Well...in the midst of the rain...the nine weeks came to an end.  I no longer had time for my students to finish the fence.  With a new nine weeks...comes many new projects & responsibilities.  Plus, we were now into ARTOBER NASHVILLE...and this is one of the main BIG projects I wanted our school to have for the celebration.  So I invited some people to come help out finish things off over fall break (yes..our district has a week off for fall break!).
IT IS DONE!!!!!!  IT IS AWESOME!!!!!!

I'm not sure if the fence will make it another year....but we'll enjoy it till this season ends!!

?!?!?RAIN DELAY!?!?!

AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We go forever without rain...FOREVER PEOPLE!!!!  BAM!!!!!!  When I want to finish up our fence mural for the start of ARTOBER NASHVILLE....we get nothing but rain!  Today makes a week we've been getting off and on showers with high humidity(not fence painting weather).  Today also makes it the official start to ARTOBER NASHVILLE.  I'm going to go cry in my Wheaties now.

Another Blog: Kandinsky Inspired

I know I've not been posting a great deal.  Please forgive me.  I've been cheating on you with another blog.  In preparation for ARTOBER NASHVILLE...Janet and I have been working on lessons and resources for the elementary teachers featuring KANDINSKY!  We're so excited about this!!!!  If you look on Pinterest...you aren't going to find much...well..except for Concentric Circles.  However, if you study his work...your mind will run wild with all the ways you can use his work as inspiration for your students!!
So yesterday and today we had professional development for the elementary art teachers of Nashville creating teacher examples and exploring the work of Kandinsky.  SO MUCH FUN!!  I lead the PD yesterday..and Janet is leading today.  The teachers are very excited.  So here is who I've been cheating on you with!!  HOPE YOU LIKE IT!!!!!!
