Rizzi Buildings With Aluminum Foil Transfer Print

My Kindergarten students are loving James Rizzi!! After looking at & discussing his work, the students drew three Rizzi inspired buildings.  They then traced their drawings with Sharpies.  Then they colored a sheet of aluminum foil with Crayola Markers.  I walked around and sprayed their foil with water, and the took a transfer print from it. The Ohs! & Ahs! when they saw the results were amazing!  

Resurrected Art Project: Line Design

There are projects that we do year after year.  The kids might love it, you might love it, or it might just be the best project to teach a set of skills the students need.  I do like to change things up.  I don't think a bored art teacher is a good thing!! ha ha  I became known(well..my blog did) for the Line Design project.  I even have a Zentangle pattern named after me (NO JOKE!).  So for many years I did this project with my 4th grade students.  However, because of scheduling, programs, field trips., & such.....one year I decided not to do that project.
Somehow, it just kind of dropped off my radar.

After several years...I decided to resurrect the lesson, but this time I'm doing it with 3rd grade!  We just started this week, and it does take a few weeks to complete.  I'll post more pictures as we complete the lesson!  

Two Georgia O'Keeffe Lessons

This week I'm using Georgia O'Keeffe as the inspiration for 3rd & 4th grade, but the projects they are doing are not the same. I love to use artists as jumping off points without doing a direct copy of the inspiration artist/art work. 

3rd grade is creating flower "ish" op art drawings using Sharpie. Next step will be to use watercolor pencils(three colors) to create a gradation of color.

4th grade are creating a mixed media piece that may look more traditionally O'Keeffe, but it is a bit more abstracted & less flower like.  I wanted my students to have an opportunity to work with oil pastels & color blending.  They did a watercolor wash over top of the picture when they were complete.

MIXED MEDIA

Tempera Paint, Collage, Sharpie, Watercolor Pencil, Glitter Glue

DAY1:  Tempera Paint Background - We discussed color: primary, secondary, analogous, tints.  

Students selected 2 colors they wished to use & created an over all patter in tempera paint.

DAY2:  Collage bugs using pattern paper & outlined in Sharpie.  

DAY3:  Complete bugs/Sharpie, draw spider web using watercolor pencils, and glitter glue accents in the same color as their paint.  

This didn't turn out exactly like how I had pictured it in my mind, but the kids really did enjoy it.  I was thinking it would be a bit more sophisticated & less cartoonish.  Oh well, they are still bright & attractive..and will look great in the art show!   

Doodle Bugs: 3rd Grade

More work for the Going Buggy for Art All School Art Show!  I'm so excited to put this thing together!! It is going to be such a fun & colorful show!!  My third graders did a great job on their Doodle Bugs!! 

Splat! : 1st Grade

So here is a fun lesson I'm doing with 1st grade.  I call it... SPLAT!  The kids must imagine that a bug just hit their windshield or they just whacked it with a flyswatter or newspaper.  The image is suppose to be humor & cartoon"ish".  The image is traced with Sharpie, colored with marker(bug only) and the rest is watercolor. We used salt to add a little texture to the background.  All and all...this is a fun project that I will revisit next year(even when we aren't having a bug based art show!). 

Mixed Media Mash-Up: van Gogh & Chagall

If van Gogh & Chagall had a baby...this is what their art work would look like! Ha Ha!!!

They started doing a drawing of sunflowers...and then traced it with Sharpie..  They were allowed to draw their vase however they wanted.  Next the students did a watercolor wash over the whole paper & placed a piece of wax paper over top to add some texture.  The students then worked on a separate flower that they would cut out/paint/ and glue into their flowers.  Last they used oil pastels to add a bit more color to their work.  The project in our curriculum was Still Life....but there is nothing saying you can't jazz it up a bit!

VBS CRAFTS:Sharpie Tie Dye Shirts

My friend Janet (Ms. Malone's Art Room) did this at her summer camp, and loved the results.

I decided this could be a fun craft for VBS.  We were already getting shirts for the kids...just opted for white so we could do this project.  The students had a lot of fun...and most of the results were great!  Using lots of rubbing alcohol was key!!!!
