Picasso Portraits With Sargent Paint Sticks

We are working on a unit of portraiture, and today learned about Picasso! 

I had the students first draw lightly with pencil. We then discussed color, and how it can transform a work & how it impacts the mood/emotion of a picture.  We had recently used Sargent Art Paint Sticks on another project, and I thought it would be perfect for this lesson as well.  If you have not used paint sticks (there are several brands)....they are WONDERFUL!  I really do like Sargent's version (I've tried a few!).  The kids really enjoyed creating their portraits, and it was so fun to hear them giggle as the worked!  I may do another post of them....I still have two more classes.

Making a Portrait Using Kleki

Have you all tried kleki.com? 

It is so much fun, so easy to use, and free!  A majority of our students use the same type of computer provided by the district.....but some do not.  I wanted to make sure we were all using the same thing so I could give them instructions that worked for EVERYONE! I'm using it with 2nd - 4th grade, and they LOVE IT!!  Here is my asynchronous video for portraits.

Art Dad: Royal Portraits

With all the craziness & confusion about school in the district we live (I teach in the neighboring district), we decided to homeschool our kids this school year (my wife has been a 3rd grade teacher, math coach, a STEM teacher).  We felt consistency was what our children needed most.  We also picked up an extra kid ( my wife’s best friend’s daughter! ). So we have a classroom almost! Haha  She is using a program that teaches across the curriculum using a common theme. Since they are currently studying Queen Victoria..she asked me if I’d do a portrait lesson with the kids. I think they turned out dynamite!!

Practicum Take Over!!!

'My practicum students created & taught their own lessons this week!!  It has been fun to watch them as they see success & areas that need improvement.  As a teacher of many many moons.....it is so energizing to see young educators start to discover who they are!!

2nd Grade
Ms. Wilson did a POP ART lesson focused on Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans.
The kids loved creating their own wacky flavors.
(Though one is Mr. E flavored...and the paint brush has red on it?? My blood?)

1st Grade

Ms. Saunders focused her lessons on Picasso & him abstracted portraits.

The students laughed so much as they created versions of themselves with eyes, ears, and mouths going every which way!  They also enjoyed using construction paper crayons.

Ms. Alday read to the students a story about scarecrows.  The students focused on using shapes to create their works of art.  They also used construction paper crayons.  

The practicum students are doing an amazing job...and my students are really enjoying them being here at our school!!  It is really a win-win situation if you are on the fence about practicum students!! 

School Picture Day for Animals: 1st Grade

In our new scope & sequence we have portraits across all grade levels. I don't know about you, but doing the same thing over and over all day long for a week at a time.....it's just too much for me to handle.  I get so bored!  So I decided to spice things up in 1st grade!  We did animal school pictures with patterned backgrounds!  We still talked about proportion, symmetry, and bust....but had a little fun with it!  I'm really proud of the kids for the amazing work at the start of the 1st grade year! 

Creature Portraits: 3rd

Week 2 of the 2013-2014 school year brought us these fun "creature" portraits.  Week 1 we reviewed self portraits & created a full body "normal" portrait with an interesting place for the background.  This week I wanted to continue with portraits, but put a fun spin on it for my students.  We started with "normal" instruction for portraiture.  After they spent sometime with a mirror, pencil, and paper...I introduced THE TWIST!  The kids LOVED it!!!  Some did a lot of erasing...others just added onto themselves.  

We also discussed taking our creatures & creating a story based off of them.  I've got to look at the curriculum, but I'd really like to pursue them writing some & drawing a narrative to go along with these!

Fancy/Fun/Crazy Hair: Kindergarten

(This child is wise beyond her years in many ways!  Love this portrait!!!)  

The last lesson from my student teacher for Kindergarten (next week is finish up week..and her last week with us).  This was a WINNER!!!!!!!!  She started by reading Fancy Nancy(who you may know has very fancy hair).  There are many books out there about crazy/messed up hair you could use if you think Fancy Nancy is too polarizing(but I'll tell ya..the boys loved it too!!!).  She taught the student some basic principles of portraiture...and then had them create crazy fancy/fun/crazy hair on themselves.  They kids were really into it!     I like to do portraits several times a year with my students...to gauge student progress.  This is a fresh way to do portraits so students aren't like..."NOT AGAIN!?!?!".  

If you look closely...they have boogers?!?!?! Yes..they were setting together.

There is something very simple & sweet about this picture.  It is one of my favorites!  

Picasso Portraits: 2nd Grade

With the required curriculum for our district complete, I told my student teacher to have fun in creating lessons that she'd like to "try out" in the safety of student teaching.  I like how she went about this lesson..different than I usually do.   I may be "borrowing" her version of this lesson!!!! ha ha  Just another reason I love having student teachers...it is a win-win situation(if they are good!).

So after the struggles with the watercolor & creating good skin tones.....I switched it over to tempera.  This seems like it was a good move!!  Students will a second day, and I'll post more pictures once that happens!
