MTSU Department of Art & Design Spring Open House

Saturday I was invited to participate in the MTSU Department of Art & Design Spring Open House. ( This is a university in Middle TN that I receive most of my student teachers & practicum students from.  They have a WONDERFUL art education program!!! ) They opened up their doors to the community to come in and learn about the department as well as provided hands on experiences.  IT WAS AMAZING!!!  They did such a good job of providing fun actives, valuable information, and a warm welcoming environment.  I loved seeing families, current students, art educators from the Middle TN area all exploring, learning, and participating together!  The volunteers/professors/staff seemed to be enjoying the experience as well!

GREAT JOB MTSU DEPARTMENT OF ART & DESIGN!!!!!!

I probably talked the ear off of the professor that was running this demo!! ha ha  She was amazing & so knowledgeable.  I probably could have spent the whole day in there!!

This was vinyl press in the Graphic Design department! I was able to get a cute canvas bag made with the Art & Design Department logo!

I visited the encaustics demo & found a couple of my fellow MNPS teachers hard at work!! I had just taken encaustics at our fall conference....
& it was busy in there.....so I let others take my spot.

This was student work hanging in the hall that I just loved!
The art world's future looks bright!!

This was a hands on sand casting session.  I had never done sand casting before...it was so much fun!  I also was able to spend time with some of my Middle TN buddies!! What do you think of my octopus?!?! I love him!! He is going to be hanging out on my desk.

Practicum Take Over!!!

'My practicum students created & taught their own lessons this week!!  It has been fun to watch them as they see success & areas that need improvement.  As a teacher of many many moons.....it is so energizing to see young educators start to discover who they are!!

2nd Grade
Ms. Wilson did a POP ART lesson focused on Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans.
The kids loved creating their own wacky flavors.
(Though one is Mr. E flavored...and the paint brush has red on it?? My blood?)

1st Grade
Ms. Saunders focused her lessons on Picasso & him abstracted portraits.
The students laughed so much as they created versions of themselves with eyes, ears, and mouths going every which way!  They also enjoyed using construction paper crayons.

Ms. Alday read to the students a story about scarecrows.  The students focused on using shapes to create their works of art.  They also used construction paper crayons.

The practicum students are doing an amazing job...and my students are really enjoying them being here at our school!!  It is really a win-win situation if you are on the fence about practicum students!!

Practicum Students

I'm fortunate to teach in an area that has several colleges that offer art education.  This allows me the opportunity for observations, practicum students, and student teachers.  I count it a blessing, privileged, and duty to welcome these educators in training into my classroom, and be a part of their art education journey.  Any one of them could potentially teach my students in the years to come.  Any one of them could potentially teach my own children.  I care about my students...and I care about my kids!! I want them to have the best possible art education....and if I can play a part in that....why wouldn't I?!?!

I encourage my practicum students to set down and work along side the kids to get to know them...and to model art skills & details in their work.

I also have them take over parts of my lessons as soon as possible.  I want them to gain confidence in the art room...and have as many experiences as possible!!  They will teach their own lesson in a week or two....this was just getting them more prepared!!!

They enjoyed the emotion monster lesson I was doing with 1st grade....but I'm wondering why they all did angry?!?!!? What is going on in my practicum students' lives??!??!?! ha ha ha

ART WITH MR.E SUMMER WORKSHOP: GROW

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR!!!
It is time to start thinking about some fun summer art education professional development!!!
This will be our 3rd year having the summer workshop here in Nashville!  It has been so much fun to develop relationships with amazing art educators from all over...from all different grade levels...and grow together personally  & professionally!  What can you expect from an Art With Mr. E Summer Workshop??  FUN, UNUSUAL & NOT SO UNUSUAL HANDS ON, AMAZING DISCUSSIONS, GUEST SPEAKERS, A FIELD TRIP!!!  3 DAYS OF AWESOMENESS!! ha ha

We kick it off the Sunday Night before the workshop with a cookout at my home!!  Then we start each morning with a breakfast table. We have a variety of projects each day that will be able to be modified to take back to your students!!  One day we will have a field trip....last summer we looked at the public art around Nashville(and they loved it so much...they want to do it this summer too!).  Mrs. E will provide lunch one of the days....and no will be going hungry!!!

Please contact me for more information!!

HERE IS A BLURB MAGDALENA WROTE ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE THE PAST TWO SUMMERS AT THE WORKSHOP!

"Mr.E's summer workshop is inspiring & refreshing! I am local in Nashville and during our last Summer PD, we took a whole day field trip to visit Sculptural & 2 Dimensional work around Nashville. Some of the things we saw, I had no clue they were even here. So, if your from out of town, find a roommate to join you! If your local, find new locations to visit for a field trip. Either way, you will leave this PD with multiple teacher samples, excellent classroom management tips and inspiring ideas to promote Art Education at your school! Oh, did I mention you get to visit Mr.E's classroom? I know all his Artroom secrets! I'm coming again this year, please join me!" -Magdalena
(IN FULL DISCLOSURE..MAGGIE WAS ONE OF MY STUDENT TEACHERS...AND SHE STILL COMES BACK!!!)

BGSU MILESTONES ALUMNI SHOW

So awhile back I received this....

"As a valued alumnus of the BGSU School of Art, we would like to invite you to participate in MILESTONES: A CELEBRATION OF BGSU SCHOOL OF ART ALUMNI.

The exhibition will open on Saturday, September 30th, and run through November 9th, 2017. The studio divisions in the School of Art – Graphic Design, 2-D Studies, 3-D Studies, and Art Education – are each inviting 10 alumni who graduated prior to 2011 and who represent some of the School’s most important accomplishments."

I have to admit..I was honored and horrified at the same time!  As a busy art educator, blogger, and father of three young children....I do not "make" the time to create my own work like I should.  So with this wonderful invitation to participate in the Milestones Alumni Show...I got crackin' on some art!!  I enjoyed creating...even though it meant less sleep than usual(ha ha).  I learned a lot through the experience...including how to ship work through the mail(and how much it costs..OUCH!).

Today when I was on Twitter..I noticed the info graphic for the show that was posted by the BGSU School of Art.  THEY USED MY WORK TO FLANK THE SIDES OF THE INFORMATION!!!!
HOW COOL IS THAT!!

I'm very excited, and will be making the trip north at the end of the month for the opening.  I'll get a chance to hang out with the art education students at BGSU, and reconnect with some of my classmates that live in the area!!  If you are in the northwest Ohio area...PLEASE COME!!!

Practicum Students' Poster/Display

I've long worked with the art education department at MTSU (Middle TN State University).  I've had a majority of my student teachers come from there, and who knows how many practicum students!!!  They truly have a wonderful program that well prepares their student for the world of art education.
As part of their stay with me (they send me three at a time..twice a week... for about 5 weeks),  they have to create a bulletin board/display.  I'm kind of possessive about my bulletin boards...so have them make posters for my wall.  Here are this year's offerings!!

I followed Twitter & Facebook closely during the NAEA NOLA...and truly enjoyed seeing all the joy & excitement of being together...learning from one another...and experiencing a fun city like New Orleans!!!  However, I thought about the reality of MONDAY!  The day after conference is over...and you find yourself back home..back at work...back to the same ol' same ol'!!  The situation is the same....BUT YOU HAVE CHANGED!!!  You have a fire/spark & are full of ideas!!  How do you keep the momentum going?  Hope my little video will encourage you to carry on with your renewed passion...and fresh ideas!

WKU Art Ed PD Continued

Ok, I'm a hot mess or something....
I never posted the rest of the pictures from the Professional Development I did up at
Western Kentucky University?!?!?!

Here is the short of it...

I assigned the groups an artist.  They had to use that artist as inspiration to create a unit.  The unit had to be made of several projects...using several different media.  They also had to create one RAZZLE DAZZLE project that was using multiple sources to create(more than one grade level...whole school..parents...teachers...etc).

This is "kind of" the process we use when we're creating our ARTOBER lessons...or other district art projects.  I think planning with other teachers is such a beautiful way to create deep & meaningful units/lessons!!!  They are able to encourage, challenge, and bring their experiences to the table. That keeps things fresh.

Wester Kentucky University: Art Ed PD

Me at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY!
This is just an hour drive north of Nashville.

I had the chance to speak at their annual professional development they have for their current students, and past graduates.  SO MUCH FUN!!!  I "ran" into the crew last year on my way to NAEA San Diego at the airport....and now have, what I hope to be, a great & lasting relationship
with the Art Ed program at WKU!!
(I'll do another post about what we worked on during my session!!!)

See this lady...if I turn up missing...it was her!!!(KIDDING!!!)
She's a fan of Art With Mr. E...and was excited I came.  She also has a ton of energy...and I think would make an amazing blogger herself!!

Here is the whole gang!!!
Prof., As. Profs, Current Students, and Past Students

This is the coolest!!!  The WKU campus is a mix of VERY old & new....you can look at buildings and name the decade!! I LOVE THAT!
