Kindergarten Funny

This is one of my kindergarten student's cityscape. If you live in or around Nashville...you know!!! Haha He made sure I knew what he did here! He was so proud.

This is the AT&T Building(formally Bell South Tower)...but no one calls it that.  It is THE BATMAN BUILDING.  It kind of looks like Batman's head.  So my amazing student when ahead and put Batman's head in for the top of a building!! ha ha  LOVE IT!

Rizzi Cities: 2nd Grade

My second graders are currently working on a cityscape unit!  After creating a cityscape under attack by monsers/aliens/robots....they have now moved on to the fun/whimsical Rizzi Cities!!!  They are LOVING IT!!!  I may be doing several posts of the results.  This is Day 1(on a four day rotation). We learned about Rizzi & looked at his work....drew our pictures...and traced with Sharpie on the first day.  Today we painted our pictures using watercolor(Prang).

A Unit On City Scapes: 1st Grade

For the past 4 weeks we've been exploring city scapes in 1st grade! I know some of you might think that sounds kind of boring for the kids, but trust me...they've loved it!
WEEK  ONE: STANDARD/BASIC CITY SCAPE - At this point I'm still trying to get the 1st graders to understand that there are "layers" to a picture(foreground, middle ground, and background).

WEEK TWO:  PATTERN BUILDINGS- I have students draw three buildings that go from one side to the other...no spaces.  They then create unique patterns on each building.  We use marker to color.  They are very bold/bright...and kids love markers.

WEEK THREE:  CREATURES ATTACKING THE CITY!!! -  The kids LOVE THIS!  We look at classic movie posters of King Kong & Godzilla for inspiration.  They then create a city scape that is being attacked by their original creature.  We talk about mode of destruction, people's reactions, and the details to make it look like the city is under attack.

WEEK FOUR:  SKYLINES AT SUNSET- This lesson a lot of us do, but the kids really enjoy it...and I feel it allows students to works on some skill building.  Here are some of my students' examples. I think they are awesome...and even more awesome when you think these are 1st graders!!!

City Scapes: 1st Grade

I've been doing a city scape unit with my 1st graders. The kids really enjoyed this project a lot...getting to cut out the skylines & creating the details on the foreground!! The following week I put a twist into the project..the kids started by finishing the details & then tracing with Sharpie.  I then showed them Starry Night.  I asked the students how they could incorporated some of Van Gogh's ideas into their picture.  The brought up colors, lines, and time of day.  The end results were pretty great!  Now these are good examples....I did have a few students in every class struggle with cutting the skyline out to stretch clear across the paper(no matter what I showed them...what I said...or that I stood over top of a few and tried to help!?!?).

Rizzi City Building Collages: 1st Grade

My student teacher was with me a couple years ago during her practicum class field experience.  I was working on a James Rizzi unit at the time, and she remembered the student really enjoying it.  So she decided that she'd do a Rizzi lesson with the first graders for their cityscapes.  They've been turning out very fun & colorful!  I think Mr. Rizzi would be very proud to know his work is inspiring so many!!!

Abstract Cityscapes w/ Value: 2nd Grade

We're looking at landscapes & cityscapes in 2nd grade.  I thought that since we just did the abstract expressionism project, that we'd "abstract" our cityscapes.  I decided to add in the value element because I had been noticing in past work that my students seem to not be able to control pressure while coloring...or just don't understand the concept.  I loved the results!!!!

Skyline/City Scapes Mixed Media : 1st Grade

Ms. Piper was finishing my lession I had started the previous week.  The first day students watched a Power Point on Skylines/Cityscapes.  They then drew a skyline and used tempera paint to create tints & shades.  The this week they used construction paper to create layers of city buildings ontop of the tempera paint skyline.  I really love the results.
