Kindergarten Meets Kandinsky

We kicked off the class with a YouTube Video.   If you have not discovered Art With Mati & Dada.....GO CHECK IT OUT NOW!!!  They are short yet informative!  Make sure you preview first..there may be a couple that you might not feel comfortable showing your students.  The Kandinsky video is great!!

We then looked at several works by Kandinsky, and I allowed my kindergarten students to make observations about what they saw.  (The little ones are so amazing in their responses!!!)

After I reviewed painting "rules/procedures", I started playing some instrumental music....passed out supplies...and let the students begin.  It was a magical time in the art room.

HERE IS A VIDEO OF A STUDENT WORKING

HERE ARE SOME WORKS IN PROGRESS

The Spore Project: Complete

Last year I stumbled upon the Spore Project.  I thought the idea was super fun & knew I wanted to take part.  However...it was the end of the school year & I just didn't have time to fit it in.  After completing the Kandinsky Fence project...I knew exactly how I wanted to do the Spore Project.  I envisioned the mushrooms looking like they were coming to their "mother ship".  This dictated what colors I'd use and how I'd place the mushrooms.  The kids really loved making the mushrooms....and the parent's were yelling "love" out their windows as I was installing them this morning. (and one posted on Facebook before I got back into the school!! ha ha)  After I "planted" them all...I sprayed them with adhesive and sprinkled glitter on them.   You can't really see it in the pictures..but the morning sun makes them shine!!!  I then sprayed a clear coat of acrylic on them.  Not sure how long they will last, but I'm hoping a week or so.  We're suppose to have good sunny weather the next 7 days!! Maybe I'll post pics as they begin to "weather".

Kandinsky Inspired Complete: FORGOT TO POST?!?

OH MY GOODNESS!?!?!??!  I just realized I never posted the finished product of my Kandinsky Inspired Fence project?!?!!?  WHAT WAS I THINKING...OR NOT THINKING?????

It has now been up for close to 3 months...and still looks as fresh as it did the first day!  Once I got it in place(not an easy task for this non-handyman)....using nails, wood glue, zip ties...prayer!!!...I gave it two coats of polyurethane.  The wood was in very poor condition when I got it....so I'm not sure how long it will hold together or how long the paint will look good.  We shall see!  Sometimes the decay process is as interesting as the creation!

Kandinsky Collaborations: K-4

Here are my collaborative pieces for ARTOBER NASHVILLE: Kandinsky Inspired!
I've never done something like this before...but am thrilled with the results.  I had purchased foam core board from Dollar Tree to assemble the students work on.  They did bow a good bit..which surprised me(they kind of have almost a plastic coat on them).  I wasn't able to do EVERY class I have, but got enough done to really show off what the kids have been learning over the past month!  Hope you enjoy!

Kindinsky Fence Project: ALMOST DONE!

I'm so excited to have this project almost wrapped up!!!  Not because it has been a pain, but because I've been so excited to see it finished and in its new home!!!!!! I have to put the end boards on...polyurethane it...throw on some sparkles...and make sure all the pieces are secure!!!

Kandinsky Shoes

So I wanted to have a bit of fun with Artober Nashville: Kandinsky Inspired.  I was going to make a "vest" that was Kandinsky Inspired...but haven't finished it yet.  The shoes weren't even on the radar...until I found a $5 pair of canvas shoes that actually fit my big feet!!!!  So last night during the big storm that was rolling through....
I was watching the second Thor...and making these!!

I tried to take images from different parts of Kandinsky's career to show the diversity of his work.  Some are pretty literal takes on his work...and some have been "modified".

I used Crayola Fabric Markers, Sharpie Fabric Markers, and regular Sharpies. It needs heat set...which I'll do a combination of iron & drier.  Since I just made them...I'm not sure how long it will last...how much it will fade...or if it will bleed through onto my socks.
I'll keep ya posted on that!!!

If I get the vest done...I'll post some pictures!

Kandinsky Fence?

So it begins....  My old pastor Facebooked me at 11:30pm one night and said his condo was getting new privacy fences...and the old ones were going to be thrown away.  He thought if anyone could do something cool and artsy with such a thing it was me.  Soooo...this is what I came up with.  With our Kandinsky focus....I thought this would be a fun use of the fences.  I primed and sectioned off the fence into squares.  I am going to have students & teachers do concentric circles.  This (and three others) will go outside our school after I poly/seal it.  Stay tuned for the progress & finished product.

Another Blog: Kandinsky Inspired

I know I've not been posting a great deal.  Please forgive me.  I've been cheating on you with another blog.  In preparation for ARTOBER NASHVILLE...Janet and I have been working on lessons and resources for the elementary teachers featuring KANDINSKY!  We're so excited about this!!!!  If you look on Pinterest...you aren't going to find much...well..except for Concentric Circles.  However, if you study his work...your mind will run wild with all the ways you can use his work as inspiration for your students!!
So yesterday and today we had professional development for the elementary art teachers of Nashville creating teacher examples and exploring the work of Kandinsky.  SO MUCH FUN!!  I lead the PD yesterday..and Janet is leading today.  The teachers are very excited.  So here is who I've been cheating on you with!!  HOPE YOU LIKE IT!!!!!!
