#turkeyaday21: Day 28

If you don't follow art YouTubers ...this turkey may not make a lot of sense. It represents one of my favorites, NerdECrafter!!!

Sunday Devotional With Mr. E: Safe

Art is often a safe place for people to retreat & find sanctuary. It is a place to "be".  The artist is able to find rest and restoration in the midst of creation.  Art can also be a safe(ish) place where one comes to define and defend their ideas and beliefs. It is a place to stand one's ground while pushing boundaries (and buttons!)  Art can be safety for comfort and confronting. It depends on the needs of the artist what that safety will bring.

I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."Psalm 91:2

What does it mean for the Lord to be both a refuge and a fortress? God as our refuge is a safe place where one finds comfort from pursuit, danger, and the troubles of this world. God as our fortress allows us to face the world in the midst of the battles that rage in and around us.  It is not safety from the struggles, but safety in the midst of them. The key is..."in whom I trust".  To trust the Lord is to know him.  When we know him we experience his powerful love.  That personal relationship can be both a place to run to for refuge & a mighty fortress to face the battles of this world. I pray you feel safe in the Lord to be all he has called you to be.

Mondo Llama Brushes

I’m not one to totally slam a brand. There are so many factors in every situation.  There are bad batches, factors in transportation (things being too hot, too cold, or getting bounced around in shipping), and operator error.  I will say I’ve liked Mondo Llama’s crayons, markers, and colored pencils (not my favorite...but I’d for sure recommended them to my students for at home use!).

....HOWEVER....

I was given some gift cards to Target from someone in the community that likes to support the arts. I went on line and saw that Mondo Llama had brushes. I ordered about a class set worth. Within a week I regretted my decision. After a couple days of using them...their was a plastic like coating start bubbling up on the handle. A couple days later their were large areas of paint pealing off.   Now you might be thinking I left my brushes in water. No, I learned not to make that mistake over 20 years ago when I first started teaching.  There is just something up with these brushes. I terribly disappointed. The brush itself is nice, but the handles....not so much.

Winged Creatures in Collage

I gave the students a second day to work on their collage. After the first day they just felt unfinished, plus, I knew we were going to be taking our characters from the collage and turning them into main characters for a narrative drawing. I wanted the students to spend extra time with this so they felt more at ease creating a story to go with them.

 Day 14...blub..bluub...bluuuub!

Sunday Devotional With Mr. E: Give

Have you ever heard of FREE ART FRIDAYS?  It is a wonderful movement happening in major cities across the United States where artists "hide" artwork.   They place it in public areas in their city & leave clues on social media of where it can be found.  The recipient then posts their find back on social media (hopefully).  There is no financial gain for the artist from this experience (except maybe a bit of publicity).  It is possible there won't even be the satisfaction of having someone post & show their appreciation for the artwork found.  It is simply another outlet for artists to share their gifts and talents with others. There is a joy & excitement to give a part of what you have been given, with no reciprocation.

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said:  'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'
Acts 20:35

We all have gifts, talents, training, and skills that can provide a living, meet needs, or gives great joy. Some are blessed to have all of that rolled into one.  However, we can look around our communities and see that there are those not about to make a living, needs that are going unmet, and people that seem so far removed from joy.  We can be so caught up in our own world that we do not see those struggling around us.  We may be jaded from past negative experiences, and feel that people need to take care of their own issues.  We may be overwhelmed by the enormity and level of need/distress that we feel unable to make a difference.  God has not called us to solve all the problems in the world.  He has called us to be available to do His will, and to use the gifts/talents/training/skills He has given us for His glory and honor.

All that we have is a gift from God.  He has modeled for us how to give. He came and gave His life on the cross for our sins.  We can't out give God!  Ask Him what He would have you do.  Can you cut back on eating out so that you can give to a food pantry?  Can you give up going to the movies on the weekend so you can volunteer at the homeless shelter?  Can you take family time and put it to good use helping out the refugees in your community?  How can you use your gifts & talents to help your community?  Pray about it.
Step out in faith...and GIVE!

!IT IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE!

Kindergartners Watercolor Painting for the 1st Time!

You could have heard a pin drop!
 These kiddos were AMAZING!!

My kindergarten students have worked with watercolor pencils & used wet brushes on washable marker marks, but this was the first time we used pan watercolors.  They did incredibly well! Not just no spills, but really applying the tips, tricks, and techniques!

Let me know in the comments!

Winged Creature Collages

The prompt I gave my students was to create a wing creature in flight.  We discussed what could be a "creature".  They decided it could be an animal, imaginary creature, food monsters, robot, or a person.  Here are some of the amazing pictures they created. I think they are incredibly fun!!

Sunday Devotional With Mr.E: JUST NICE?

We have all encountered works of art where we could say nothing more than "That's nice." There was nothing remarkable about the work.  There was nothing horrible about the work.  It was just simply "nice".  I would venture to guess that a majority of artists do not desire to create "nice" art work (or cute).  Love it or hate it...the artist desires to connect with the viewer's heart, passions, and intellect.  To merely say that their work is nice would be an insult.  Nice art does not get remembered.  It does not create conversation/buzz.  It just is.

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot.  So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.  Revelation 3:15-16

Where are you at in your faith?  Are you living a nice Christian life?  Doing nice Christian things?  Going to church & doing "churchie" things each week like a good boy/girl?  We can go through the motions of faith will little to no passion or zeal.  Now there is something to say about a stable, mature, and faithful believer.  However, one can be stable, mature, and faithful and still have a passionate/difference making walk with the Lord.  In Revelation, we see Jesus making a very bold statement about those just going through the motions.  I believe as we grow in Christ, we become grounded in the Word, stable in our day to day walk with Him, and able to trust in God's faithfulness(because we've had the time and opportunity to see Him faithful in the good & bad that life has thrown our way!) .  I also believe that we have more reason to live a life of passion & excitement for the things of God.  Settling into our walk with God does not mean settling for less than He has for us.  We want to be more than just "nice" Christian men/women.  We want to be known as men/women that live life like they know God is alive & real in their life.  It makes a difference that should be seen.  Not for our glory, but His!
