Fish Tanks/Perspective

I've been talking about overlapping and showing "space" in your work with my second graders.  We created fish tanks that had a defined corner to create a bottom, side, and back to the tank.  I was not looking for mastery as this is a new concept to them.  I was just introducing the idea. We used watercolor pencils to finish the work.

YOU ARE GOING TO NOTICE IN SOME OF THE PICTURES THE VERTICAL LINE IS VERY CURVED.  THAT IS BECAUSE THE PAPER CURLED WHEN IT DRIED & I DIDN'T FLATTEN IT OUT BEFORE SNAPPING THE PICTURE! ha ha

Watercolor Pencil Still Life: Cezanne Inspired

I had not used watercolor pencils with my 3rd graders, and was excited to have them create with a new (to them) medium!  We watched a short video about Paul Cezanne & his still life work to kick the lesson off.  I then gave them the watercolor pencils and 90 lbs wet media paper.  I did not allow them to draw with regular pencil first.  They were a bit scared to start, but then were totally into it!  Most of them did get to the point of painting by the end of class.  Next class time I passed their work back out and asked them to take a good look at their art.  I asked them to identify 3 things they like & 3 things they would like to improve.  I passed the watercolor pencil back out, and allowed them 20 min. to make the changes they felt their work needed.  They used the rest of the time to paint.

Water Color / Water Color Pencil Landscapes: 4th Grade

My forth graders created unreal color landscapes in watercolor last week.  This week we are using watercolor pencils to add details, and finish up any "unfinished" areas.  They have loved getting to use supplies that just weren't able to use while we were virtual!

Gnome Landscapes: 4th Grade

This is another project possibility for my spring all school art show (we create several pictures within a theme using different media/techniques & then the students select their favorite work out of those works).  This project took two class times for students to complete.  The first day they drew the toadstools & ground, and then they colored their pictures using watercolor pencils.  I demonstrated coloring with watercolor pencils and showed them how they mix once painted.  On the second day, students finished up coloring their work, and then painted the pictures.  After finishing that....the students created gnome versions of themselves to add into their pictures.  They used colored pencils for this part of the project.  I'm really enjoying the results!
 SO FUN!

This gnome looks very grumpy....so cute!

She said her gnome was grass surfing! ha ha

This one didn't finish the gnome yet...but loved the background!

Very Mixed Media Bugs: 4th Grade

MIXED MEDIA
Tempera Paint, Collage, Sharpie, Watercolor Pencil, Glitter Glue

DAY1:  Tempera Paint Background - We discussed color: primary, secondary, analogous, tints.
Students selected 2 colors they wished to use & created an over all patter in tempera paint.
DAY2:  Collage bugs using pattern paper & outlined in Sharpie.
DAY3:  Complete bugs/Sharpie, draw spider web using watercolor pencils, and glitter glue accents in the same color as their paint.

This didn't turn out exactly like how I had pictured it in my mind, but the kids really did enjoy it.  I was thinking it would be a bit more sophisticated & less cartoonish.  Oh well, they are still bright & attractive..and will look great in the art show!

Buggy Mono-Prints: 1st grade

So this week I've been doing mono-printing with my first graders.  I decided to use watercolor pencils. It has worked ok, but will probably go a different direction next time around!  I've done oil pastels in the past ...both water soluble and regular.  I think the regular oil pastels...and then using a spoon to rub it worked the best.  Live & learn!!!!

I have a bunch of small water bottles always at the ready!!!

EVEN MORE PATTERN LANDSCAPES: 4th Grade

Ok...I won't subject you to many more posts of this project (maybe one more).  I just love the fun factor of this project!  The kids have really enjoyed using watercolor pencil!!
