A couple weeks ago I shared my 2nd grade Collagraph Prints with you. I was only able to print with about half the class each time. This week I was able to finish up printing with the rest of the students. I just had to share more with you....they are so fun!
So the past two class times in 2nd grade we've been working on collagraphs. When I first started teaching...I had no idea what they were. I did not have art till high school...and we jumped straight into linoleum block printing. When I went to college...print making was one of the classes I did not end up taking. So...needless to say...I've learned a lot "on the job". I honestly feel I learn something new every school year in regards to print making with my students. AS IT SHOULD BE!!!
This year I decided to mark the tables with painters tape for where they needed to place their printing plate. That way the mess is more on one side when they are inking their plates, and there will be space for them to print onto their paper that is clean(ish). I also used the painters tape to tape down the trays for the ink. After years of having them move all over the place and kids incredibly messy trying hold it down as they obtained ink....the painters taped did the trick!!!
Someone asked me online how I do my plates because they looked different than theirs. I just used regular old construction paper!!! I usually do use tag board, old folders, or card stock, but this year I totally forgot. These are a very happy accident!! The key though is...glue coverage on the back so they do not peal up when applying ink!!
Print making is a lot of work! It is all hands on deck..and sometimes you still aren't able to get all the students through. However, the results are AMAZING. I'm so excited about my students' ugly duck prints!!!! Take a look at Day One's offerings!!
Here is the previous post explaining the idea behind the project!
Collagraph or Collograph?? I have seen it both ways?!?
Print making is one of those things I'm not as comfortable with..even after 20 yrs of teaching. I did not have it in college....and it flies in the face of my OCD nature!! ha ha Lets face it..it is a messy project! However, my kids are beyond excited to create their collagraph prints!!!
I'm preparing for my All School Annual Art Show...which is themed Story Book Forest. All our lessons have been tied back to a nursery rhyme, fable, or children's story. Today I read them The Ugly Duckling. You would be amazed how many had never heard it before!! I also told them the Twisted version..where he just grows up to be a really ugly duck. ha ha So they were charged with creating a really ugly duck collagraph plate. For those of you who are not familiar with this type of printing...you basically are creating a collage as the plate. You have to make sure that you talk to the kids about layering the paper to create the separations of shapes. I used a cardstock that was donated to the school...it really doesn't matter the color.
