My Odd Anniversary: Nashville Tornado 1998

Your first year of teaching is never "easy".  People have all kinds of stories from their beginnings in education.  Some funny, some embarrassing, and some are just plain cringey.

My first year of teaching ended in disaster.  This is not an exaggeration.  There literally was a natural disaster.  A tornado(s) went right through Nashville.  Growing up in Appalachia in the middle of the forest, I had no idea a tornado could hit a city.  It can. It did.  I had left 15 min. before it hit, and had been in my classroom till six at night the whole week until the day of the tornado.  Everyone thought I was still in there, and had the police dogs search my portable to see if I was still in there underneath the debris.  I finished the year on a cart and working from the stage of the cafeteria. I learned a lot about myself & what a wonderful community can do in the face of adversity.

TGE Scarecrow at Cheekwood: Lady Rosinfair

Every year Cheekwood Gardens has their Cheekwood Harvest festival and invites area schools & organizations to create scarecrows to go along their garden pathway.  This year the theme was botanicals grown at the gardens.  I selected the Rosinweed.  Imagine a very tall yellow daisy type flower (I had not heard of it before?!?).  Last year was my first year to participate...and I learned a lot through my mistakes.  It will be up till the first of Nov.  Scroll down to read the amazing story my 2nd graders came up with.

Lady Rosinfair  (inspired by the Rosinweed)

Lady Rosinfair came to life when a magical princess longed for a friend cast a spell on her favorite flower. They danced together as the breezes blew, shared secrets in the sunlight, and played together in the rain.  (based on ideas from second graders at TGE)

Kindergarten Funny

This is one of my kindergarten student's cityscape. If you live in or around Nashville...you know!!! Haha He made sure I knew what he did here! He was so proud.

This is the AT&T Building(formally Bell South Tower)...but no one calls it that.  It is THE BATMAN BUILDING.  It kind of looks like Batman's head.  So my amazing student when ahead and put Batman's head in for the top of a building!! ha ha  LOVE IT!

Basket Sale at SmART

I know I've been posting a lot about SmART lately.  I'm not paid/funded in any way by them...I just have a whole lot of love & respect for them as an organization!!

This post is about a "Basket Sale" event they had last week.  Every once and awhile they have a sale where you can fill up a basket for $25.  I got their on the first day of the sale(was the first in line), and I have to say....I got a ton of great stuff(future post if I think to snap some pictures of my haul).  I purchased great new and used craft supplies & oddities(you never know what they will get in stock..so fun!).  They were heading up a block party at the shopping plaza where the store is located.  They had an area artist doing a mural in the store, Gnash from the Nashville Predators was there greeting fans(and making art!!!!).  They had an ax throwing booth (I was too scared to try it! ha ha).  There was also live music!  WHAT A GREAT EVENT!!!!! Here are some pictures...I wish I would have gotten a few more so you could she how much fun it was!! Now this is not every basket sale...this was just a special one (but they are all awesome because it is all for a great cause!!).

SmART: ART CLASH

I forgot to post the pictures from the April 19th Art Clash
sponsored by SmART Nashville.
I had so much fun being a part of this amazing
fundraiser for such an awesome organization!

The event was set up like "CHOPPED" for art!  Teams signed up ahead of time & were allowed to bring some of their own supplies/materials.  There were mandatory materials they had to incorporate.  They had 2 hours to complete their work!  I was one of the judges.

If you don't know about SmART Nashville...please check them out!
