Tints & Shades Turtles: 2nd Grade

When we returned to in person classes, I decided that we would do ALL THE THINGS!!  I was a little more cautious when we returned for 6 weeks in the fall (using supplies I could easily disinfect). So my students had not painted since before the tornado & then pandemic (which is going to be a year ago next week I believe).  I was so excited to just give my students supplies they could get messy with & create whatever their hearts desired.  Well...that lasted 1 day.  I quickly realized my students were out of practice with.....well....a lot of things!  I needed to reign our project in a bit, and use it as a stepping stone to be more creative as we got back into the swing of being "in" school.

So we worked on tints & shades creating turtles (my fav. animal).

The students loved it & I remained relatively sane that first week back! ha ha We're starting to get our in person school groove back!!

FALL LEAVES: 2nd Grade

I love fall...and I love fall art!!!  My second graders created these amazing fall inspired, tint focused 12x18 paintings!!  They loved working large & with paint (who doesn't love painting?!!?).  We reviewed different types of leaves & I allowed them to select the one they felt they would be most successful with.  After drawing their leave with pencil..they outlined with black tempera.  I then did a demo on tints (and we discussed shades as well).  This gave students the needed information & gave the black paint time to dry.  I then allowed theme to select on color to tint.  As you can see...they were successful!  The hallway looks AMAZING!!!!!

ET PHONE HOME: Tints & Shades

I think I'm having flashbacks to my childhood....E.T. reaching up and pointing to the night sky!!! ha ha   I decided to have my 4th grade use complementary colors with tints & shades to create these other worldly sky paintings w/ cityscape & robot.    The kids really enjoyed the project...painting is a crowd fav!!! Over all they did well, but I noticed many of my students struggled to apply the paint in smooth brush strokes.  I kept telling them if it sounded scratchy..they did not have enough paint on their brush.  It is a skill we need to continue to develop!

Tints & Shades Bumble Bees: Kindergarten

We are starting our "GOING BUGGY FOR ART" units in preparation for our spring all school art show in March.  These buzzy beauties were created by my kindergarten students.  We looked at creating tints & shades, and proper painting techniques.  I felt like they did a pretty good job over all.  We may use them for the art show with some mixed media additions.

Skyline/City Scapes Mixed Media : 1st Grade

Ms. Piper was finishing my lession I had started the previous week.  The first day students watched a Power Point on Skylines/Cityscapes.  They then drew a skyline and used tempera paint to create tints & shades.  The this week they used construction paper to create layers of city buildings ontop of the tempera paint skyline.  I really love the results.

Tints & Color Mixing with Kindergarten

Kindergarten did the Georgia O'Keeffe lesson I've shared on here in years past.  They start with a dot in the center of the page, and draw six wavey lines coming from the dot.  They then pick a plate of paint that I've already pre-dispensed(I try to have a variety of color combos).  Everyone gets white to create tints.  I showed them how to mix their colors on the paper, and to paint from the center point out to create a "flow".  At the end of class we discussed what tints & shades were, they were given a color & had to tell me what two colors made it, and then just other random color knowledge.

Tints & Shades 2nd Grade

This assignment is not for the faint of heart!  The images you are about to see are the best of my 2nd grade classes.  They are not representative of the WHOLE second grade!

I love teaching tints & shades!  However, I wanted to try to change up how I taught/reviewed this topic.  I decided it would be a "great idea" to have the kids create these images.  I mean..really..how hard can it be...all you have to draw is a line and a circle...and the rest is paint!  Even with 2 demos, examples on the board, verbal reminders....this was not easy for 2nd graders!!!  Its always good to try new things...new ways of teaching old ideas...but sometimes...you are better off stickin' with your tried & true lessons!! ha ha

Chihuly Inspired Paintings

After watching a video on Chihuly & looking at some images I had from the St. Louis installation we were ready to begin our project. Providing background knowledge to your projects is important for your students to view it as more than just an odd skill their odd teacher is making them do.
My students revisited the idea of our project from last week, and recreated the line drawing that they would eventually paint.  I introduced analogous colors & revisited complementary colors.  Students then picked out the analogous colors they wanted & received white to tint the image.  While they were painting I allowed the Chihuly video to play in the background.  After students were finished with their analogous color, they received their complementary color to make a line/ripple design on their image.

This is image is from the Chihuly exhibit at St. Louis.
