Positive & Negative Space: 2nd Grade

I've really been thrilled with my 2nd graders Positive/Negative Space pictures!!
2nd Grade has been a bit challenging at times,
but I feel like they are really coming along/maturing!!
 NEVER GIVE UP FRIENDS!!!
It is always a joy when they surprise you!
I thought that the water bottle was going to be a major struggle for the students, but they LOVED IT!! And the two I posted here are AWESOME.  We discussed shadows just briefly...and I showed them a few examples.

Positively/Negatively Frustrated!

So I'm teaching Postive/Negative Space to my 2nd graders this week.  We've looked at still life art...created some...and now are making the jump to Postive/Negative Space.  I've struggled a good bit with my 2nd graders this year.  I'm not sure exactly why, but I've had to reinvent how I teach some concepts to get them to understand.  So in the midst of scratchin' my head wondering what I did wrong...I came up with this quick idea.  I used my document camera(a Ladybug) to show them.  They thought I was crazy at first when I dumped the sharpener bowl on top of the turtle.  However...they finally "GOT IT" when they saw me remove the turtle from the pile of shavings.  Don't know if you are having the same issues as me, but maybe this idea will help you too!!!

Postive/Negative Space - 2nd Grade

Our curriculum had a still life lesson to start the nine weeks....but I wanted to introduce some other things into lesson lesson.  If you've ever done positive/negative space with your students...you know that it can be challenging.  However, I feel it is really important to get them to consider the space around the main objects in their work.  I'm pretty proud of my kiddos!  I also allowed them to use watercolor pencils for the first time.....THEY LOVED THEM!!!
