At the beginning of every year, I do a collaborative project with the whole school. This year our theme is GROWING TOGETHER. I thought leaves would be an appropriate subject matter. We talked about color families & pattern. Students used Sharpies to trace their pencil drawings & markers to color. They were so beautiful & vibrant. I displayed them in 7 black frames around the main hall of our school & this large bulletin board in the 3rd-5th grade hall (all students pass it on the way to specials/related arts). I'm so excited with how it turned out. The students are loving hunting for their special leaf! (each student made two)

Line Design Complementary Colors
The students are really enjoying creating these works. I will say..at first they were kind of intimidated when it came to creating the background. Once they got into it though...they LOVED it.
Great for those of you teaching virtually!

Analogous Color Blending
Here is a fun lesson (great for virtual teaching!) to work on color blending using analogous colors. I used the idea of "feathers", but this would also be great in the fall using leaves. No matter the form it takes...focus on using analogous colors in order to create beautiful color blends.

Can We Talk About Wayne Thiebaud??
I'm so inspired by Wayne Thiebaud!!!
I usually see people using his early work. It is lovely & so accessible for young artists as inspiration. However, that is not the work to which I'm referring. I love his landscapes. They have such amazing color and atmospheric perspective. I feel like I'm flying over his world as I view the paintings. If you are not familiar with the "newer" work of Thiebaud...hop on-line and do a search!
You will have a "new/old" artist to add to your landscape units!

Did you know I interviewed Wayne Thiebaud? YEP YEP!! Here is the link to that post from 2014.

Non-Objective Art: 2nd Grade
My students really enjoyed looking at and discussing non-objective art. I was kind of surprised by their thoughts on why non-objective art is created, meaning it holds, and why the did/didn't like it.
Here are the images my students created! We focused on geometric shapes & discussed value, color blending, and contrast. I gave them different objects they could use to arrange and trace. I'll revisit non-objective art later in the year, and I'll be excited to see what they create with this foundation!!

The Last of the Franz Marc Inspired Paintings: 3rd Grade
Here are the last images (this year) of Franz Marc project. The kids really loved working on them. It was one of the only large pictures we worked on all year. Since I only see some of my students once a week...and some once every other week.....it is important to keep the size of their art manageable for the time we have together. This project took two class times, but it was worth it!

What do you notice about these works of art?
This week I was struck by what I think is an interesting a phenomena while grading. After looking at the pictures..can you tell what it is? No? Give up? The colors! These students gravitated toward a certain color palette this nine weeks in all their projects?!?!?! I know I've gone through phases with the colors I use in my paintings...but I've never really noticed elementary age students doing this. Just found it interesting.

Abstract Cityscapes w/ Value: 2nd Grade
We're looking at landscapes & cityscapes in 2nd grade. I thought that since we just did the abstract expressionism project, that we'd "abstract" our cityscapes. I decided to add in the value element because I had been noticing in past work that my students seem to not be able to control pressure while coloring...or just don't understand the concept. I loved the results!!!!

Not My Bulletin Boards..BUT COOL IDEAS!!!
These are a couple things happening in my hallway at school that I thought were fun & wanted to share.
Mrs. Manning is very proud of her board!!! She actually had a parent get his picture by it today....and it wasn't her parent!?!!? ha ha She doesn't always think of her self as a creative person, but I love this idea!!
She bought plastic Easter eggs (I'm sure on sale after Easter)...glittered them...and then hot glued them onto a CD. The little alien she purchased through Oriental Traders, but I'm sure you could find something elsewhere(or have the kids make one out of Model Magic!)
She wrote the name on the CD...one for each of her students. The girl aliens had bows!! ha ha I think I might have used stickers for the kids names for an extra POW of color, but Sharpie works!!
Ms. C is a Pinterest QUEEN! I'm not sure if she got this from Pinterest, but I wouldn't doubt it. They are small paper plates that you can get just about anywhere. Wal-Mart has them for a good price I know..and a large variety of colors. She has a "WELCOME" sign above her door...and her Word Wall with them inside her room! It really adds a great pop of color!!

Even More Circular Design Paintings: 2nd Grade
I really hope ya'll are not getting tired of these...because there may be one or two more posts as the rest of my classes finish their work. This group I felt has done the best so far. I placed them outside my room as soon as they were dry, and the response from the students & faculty has been amazing!
