Crayola Dry Erase Crayons

Our "arts" director sent us a video link that showed that you can use Crayola's new Dry Erase Crayons on aluminum foil.  After doodling this flower on the foil...I starting thinking about the classroom application of such a project.  I think creating a medieval unit....with a coat of arms as one of the lessons...would be a great use of the product.  The major problem is that they are pricey.  The ones I found were just under $4.  Obtaining a class set would be a pricey venture.  Maybe they price will come down?!

  1. I plan on posting about these soon! For fun, I picked up a pack when it was on sale at an art supply store. While I haven't experimented with them much, they seem to solve the problem of trying to demonstrate creating value with pressure on a whiteboard! You can do simple shading and value changes with these crayons on a whiteboard, just like chalk on a chalkboard.

  3. I hope so! These look like one of the new products Crayola tries to push each fall. A few years ago, I fell in love with construction paper crayons, but when I went to buy a few packs for my summer program, I couldn't find them anywhere! Crayola stopped making the individual packs and ONLY made classroom packs. So here's hopin'!

  4. I've seen these and wanted to try them! I'm so glad I saw your post about them working on foil. This summer I discovered all these elementary art blogs and I am so glad you all exist! Haha. I think I found your blog first through Pinterest. I've been teaching art at a K-4 school for 5 years now and you all have inspired me to start my own blog. I love the art teacher community you all have created online!

  5. I'll let you know how it works when I try it with my kids! A good idea though.

  6. Will they wipe off the foil or is it permanent?

  7. I had not really though to use these in any other way than on the white board - so that is cool!

I purchased a few sets for my classroom last year, my only concern/complaint is that the students use them like crayons (of course) so they do a drawing on the mini whiteboards that I have...then they color in THE WHOLE THING - try getting all of that OFF, it gets tricky. The kids cannot really clean off what they have created with just a sock, or small piece of fabric. It was disappointing - I thought they were going to be the end of my kiddos using SO much paper! Just my 2 cents...

  8. I took some pictures and wrote up a bit about using the crayons to demonstrate value on a whiteboard.
