LeRoy Neiman

I had never heard of LeRoy Neiman until today when I saw on CNN that he had died.  They called him a "sports" artist.  I was curious.  After spending some time looking through images of his work...he seems more than just a sports artist...but images like the one above I feel are his most successful.

  1. I love his animal work and did a lion art lesson inspired by his colorful and expressive work. I just pinned some more of his wonderful artwork yesterday with another lesson idea in mind. So sorry to hear about his passing.

  2. I am afraid that the reason you didn't know LeRoy Neiman is because he was most popular before you where born.lol I remember him from the '70s football (he did other sports too)and the Olympics. His fun, energetic style was perfect for the times. I don't know why he hasn't been popular again. I love his colors!
Are you going to do an art project with your students a`la Neiman?

  4. Sad to hear he passed away. I remember his art as a kid in the 70's also. I only remember his sports pictures, I don't recall any animals, I'll have to look them up!

  5. I grew up in Saratoga Springs NY where there is a beautiful thoroughbred race track. I first remember him when he did some amazing rich and colorful paintings of the horses, probably in the 70's though I'm not positive. I believe he may have done some Olympic poster designs though I might be thinking of Peter Max since they both use such bright rich colors.

  6. I remember most his paintings/posters for the Olympics. I also believe that he painted 'live' on TV during a sporting event - loved his use of arbitrary colors to create the illusion of movement!
