Mr. E & Turtles is like Peanut Butter & Jelly! They just go together. Over the years I've collected & have been gifted many turtles. I passed out a class worth of stuffed turtles to my 4th graders and asked them to draw them from 4 different points of view/perspectives. I had teacher examples on the board and did a demo so the students could see just what I meant for them to be doing. They really turned out great. I would have shown more, but many did not get a chance to finish coloring them.
In Nashville Arts Magazine they have started a new section called ART SMART, and it is all about arts education. They called me and asked if they could do an interview with me for the first edition. I was really pleased with the article! There is only one odd part....they said I made the bottle cap fruits/veggies for Healthy Kids Week. I don't even know what that is?!?!?!?! ha ha Other than that...its great!!
Our dear friend, Phyl, from There's a Dragon in My Art Room is retiring. I decided to have an ode to Phyl with my 3rd graders!! They created these dragon landscapes in collage. Phyl, you are truly an inspiration to all art educators...and I am glad to call you my friend!! Also...I think you will haunt me till I retire because every time I do a dragon project, I'll think about ya!! ha ha
There are projects I do at the end of the year to make sure my student "get it". With kindergarten I always tend to have a collage project to check cutting & gluing skills. We are going to be working on these for two class times....this is end of day one. I'm THRILLED! They are looking great...and the future is lookin' bright here at Tulip Grove. I have an amazing "crop" of great artists coming up!!
It looks like I might actually get to go this next year!!! I've posted about this a year ago, but would really like some fresh perspective after the NY NAEA Convention. What presentations were most meaningful to you? What are you looking to learn more about that could be presented at convention?? LET ME KNOW! I'd love to write up a proposal, but would never want to do something that was not meaningful/helpful to my peers!!
I LOVE WEAVING! MY KIDS LOVE WEAVING!!! WEAVING TAKES FOREVER!!!! ha ha We spent 4 weeks in class working on our weavings, and they are looking AMAZING! However, I have a few more things I need to hit to finish off the school year. So after the 4 weeks in class...I open up my classroom at 7:45 so the kids can come in and continue to weave. I have to kick them out about 7:58 so they can get to their classrooms(my room is on the 3rd & 4th grade hall)...but it is enough time to get a string or two done for most. I am always so encouraged by the kids that come in extra to work. Some even try to get their parents to bring them a bit earlier than normal so they can work. I love seeing their energy and excitement for weaving. One student actually wants to find a giant piece of cardboard and make a kid sized loom for a summer project. I wouldn't put it past her!!!
So we finished painting our buildings during TCAP week. The 40 min. classes were just enough to get the job done. It was hard to get students to really include detail in these pieces. I think I may have had one student out of all my classes try to use different reds/browns for the bricks on their building. The rest were just happy to slap any old color down. I even had a finished example that used different colors for the bricks, curtains in the window, and door/window frames. Maybe it is the time of the year....they are just done and don't want be challenge to go above and beyond anymore?!?
