Self Portraits - Kindergarten

 

We're over half way through the year, and I like to revisit self portraits a few times in Kindergarten.  Today we talked about how shapes make up our body & what parts connect to what(though I still had one student tell me after his head came his foot?!?! ha ha).  I loved what my kiddos came up with!! Some of them really added a lot of interesting details.

I have a student in this same class that I really want to help, but I'm at a loss of what to do?  At this point of the year, she is still not even giving me a head with arms and legs coming out.  I just don't think she's developmentally ready.  Any thoughts??

Alien Oil Pastel Pictures - 1st Grade

Here my 1st graders first drew their picture in pencil & then traced with glue.  The following week they used oil pastels to color.  I think I like the result of chalk pastels and glue line drawings better....but I don't like the mess of them!!!  One of the concepts I was trying to get through to my first graders was ground.  We talked about foreground, middle ground, and background, but I was more concerned with getting a ground line in the picture so their aliens weren't floating.  As you can tell...most of them got it(you'll always have a few?!?!).

More Alien Sculptures - 2nd Grade

My second grade crew today went a little overboard with the construction paper, but I still found many gems!!!!  I'm really enjoying seeing how the kids approach this project.  Creating the environment for self expression is such a gift!!!!

Alien Sculptures - 2nd Grade

This lesson came out of the Chihuly lesson from the fall.  The students cut the water bottle in half and then wrapped it with tissue paper.  Yarn for hair, pipe cleaners for arms, and whatever out of the scrap box to finish them off!  (googlie eyes added by me with hot glue just to make sure they didn't come off)  The students loved it...and I was so happy to see the

 fun personalities come out as they added to their bottle creatures!! 

Alien Eyes - 3rd Grade

So I've had this project rattlin' around in head for awhile.  My 3rd grade class on Friday was kind of out of the loop from the other 3rd grade classes(snow days, me being out, etc)....so I thought it would be a good time to give it a try.  The kids LOVED IT!!!  Several of my students told me they were going to go home and try to do some more.  SOOO...I think I'll actually make this my 4th grade lesson for next week.  You'll be "seeing" more of these soon!

Colorful Spider Web Patterns - K

I always begin Kindergarten with a story.  Today we read Eric Carle's The Very Busy Spider.  During demo, I reviewed vertical & horizontal lines, and introduced diagonal lines.  Students created their spider web using these lines, and then traced them with black crayon.  I then reviewed patterns.  This is a big concept that they go over in their regular classroom, but it is nice to reinforce concepts whenever possible. 

More Wire Sculptures - 4th Grade

I really like how some of these dudes & dudettes are turning out!  The positions are really good on most of them, though I've had a few fall flat.  This is just paper, pipe cleaners, glue, and acrylic paint.  I've never been a big sculpture/3-D art teacher....but this year I decided I'd try to push myself out of my comfort zone.  Between Chihuly projects in the fall & the projects I'm working on now....I think I've gotten over my fear of 3-D!  Over the years I've had to do this with several things...and the pay off is always AMAZING!
