Painted Branches: 2nd Grade

Here is a fun project my student teacher is doing this week with my 2nd graders. They are using the Biggie Watercolor sets by Crayola.  We felt this would be best as not to have the students muddy up colors in their painting by all the choices.   The Biggie sets only have four colors, and Ms. G told the student to not use the red.   Plus the bright colors look almost tie dye "ish"...and the brightness of the color allows the black to really have a great impact.  We cut the 12x18 paper to 10x18 just to emphasis the length of branch. This project was completed in one class time.

  1. These are really nice - but the directional way the color is applied and goes from yellow & green to blue makes it look like ground/horizon/sky. They just beg to be turned vertically and then will look like skinny trees. Sorry! Otherwise, very pretty!

    1. Always a critic in every group!!! :) I think if you saw them in person it might not be so offensive. The colors melt into each other ...and are not so hardlined.

    2. Its not offensive; I just keep turning my head sideways! (First I turned my iPad sideways - and of course the pictures turned too.). Just something to think about if you repeat the project.

    1. They turned out pretty good! It is funny though, they did not want to overlap the colors!?!?! We were trying to get them to blend one into the other.

  3. I am a volunteer art docent at my daughter's school in WA state. No art teachers here! I would love to try this. Did the kids paint the background first and then paint the black tree on top of the background colors? Was the background in watercolor and the tree branch in black paint? Did you let them lightly draw with pencil first? Thanks for any feedback!

    1. They first drew it out. They then painted with watercolor. They then painted with black acrylic paint(tempera will work also). Hope that helps..let me know if you need anything else.
