We're looking at landscapes & cityscapes in 2nd grade. I thought that since we just did the abstract expressionism project, that we'd "abstract" our cityscapes. I decided to add in the value element because I had been noticing in past work that my students seem to not be able to control pressure while coloring...or just don't understand the concept. I loved the results!!!!

ReplyDeleteThese look great. Hard to believe they are by second graders. Did you use any particular word when teaching value? Pressing hard, light, etc?
I did say hard/medium/light ..pressure....and demo'ed it while talking about it. I wasn't sure if it would sink in, but I'd say about 90% got it...and it was an ELL class!!
ReplyDeletePressing lightly seems to be a really difficult concept for so many kids - I have been known to have them 'warm up' on a throw away piece of paper with some foam underneath. IF they press too hard their pencil punches holes, so they have to lighten up!

these look great! pressing hard and soft is something ive been working on across the board, all grade levels. i agree, it's a challenge for many, but with repetition they get it and can keep it up beyond the one project.
ReplyDeleteDid you have them just draw the city or did you have them make a stencil first and then trace it?
ReplyDelete@ Mrs. Erb They drew three lines from one side to the other to create the skylines...no stencils.
