Miro Inspired

We watched two short elementary appropriate videos on Miro & his work.  We talked about abstracting animals and looking for the shapes that make up the animals. We also reviewed the symbols Miro used in his work and discussed other symbols that might like to add. After coloring the animals and symbols with crayons, students went back to a painting station to put a watercolor wash over their picture (watered down liquid water color).

Here is the video the kids liked the best!  I kind of was worried they would think it was too weird, but the LOVED IT!!! ha ha  I'm glad my humor and 5 year olds are on the same level! 

 

Hickory Dickory Dock: Kindergarten

Here is a possible kindergarten project for the art show.  We read Hickory Dickory Dock, and then created a page of clock faces.  Next they traced all their pencil marks with crayon to create the resist.  They then picked two colors to do a wash over the page.  We finished the day with sprinkling salt on top of their wet pictures.  Next week they will be creating collage mice to add to their pictures.

Hands Across Time & Place: 3rd Grade

My third graders have been looking at cultural connections world wide.  We've tried to find themes, similarities, and shared experiences.  We've really enjoyed looking at "HANDS" through out history...and through out the world! Students started by tracing & cutting out their hand.  On their first day they selected their color palette & used color pencils to go around their hands. On the second day they used oil pastels, watercolor, construction paper, and construction paper crayons.  The oil pastels & watercolor had to be within the color palette the selected before...and the construction paper had to be a contrasting color.  I loved the results, but do think we could spend another class time adding a bit more to them.

I had my 1st grade students use crayons as a resist. They then did a watercolor wash over top of the crayon & used salt to create texture in their paint. This allowed me to hit several standards & go over material usage.

Art Camp Session 2 - Rainforests

We were trying to go around the world with our art, and for South America we decided to do a "Rainforest" inspired picture. We talked about how rainforests are colorful & full of life. We also talked to the students about how things in the rainforest for sure overlap! The first step was to have the students draw their trees. We made sure that they placed the trees at different levels on their page & that the branches overlapped at the top. Then we had the students draw a variety of patterns in their trees(encouraging them to first break the tree into sections to get more patterns into each tree). Next the students traced everything with Sharpie. Then students did a watercolor wash over the whole page(we limited them to 3 colors & encouraged them to overlap the colors...but to keep it very watery/washy!!). We used liquid watercolor, but standard watercolors would work to if they kept it watery!! Last step was to go over the trees with marker. We really pushed them to color each section individually & to not cross over the Sharpie outlines.
