Artist Trading Cards 2020

I usually create a display outside my classroom of all the artist trading cards we receive. However, with the schools being closed, I thought I’d share my cards here and on social media. Please let me know if you see your students work! Thank you Nic Hahn for doing this amazing event for so many years. It has connected art teachers and young artists from across the world.

Here is a look at some of the Artist Trading Cards from my awesome artists created for Mini Matisse 's #ATCSwap!

INFO ON DOING LOCAL/DISTRICT ATC SWAPS

Artist Trading Cards (ATC).....WHAT ARE THEY?!?

  ATC are baseball card sized works of art that can be trades/swapped within your school, district, state, or beyond!  They can be created independently, collaboratively, as a skill check (shading, perspective, color...etc), as a one day project, part of a printing lesson...and on and on and on!! They are a fun and versatile addition to your regular lessons.

Though their media/subject matter can be just about anything...there are some norms that you need to set to make trades/swaps run smoothly.  

• STICK WITH STANDARD BASEBALL CARD SIZE - 2 1/2 X 3 1/2
• USE A THICK PAPER OR BACK IT ON A TAGBOARD TYPE MATERIAL
• CREATE A TEMPLATE FOR STUDENTS TO FILL OUT ON THE BACK OF THEIR WORK THAT INCLUDES THEIR NAME, GRADE, MEDIA, TITLE FOR THE ART WORK, AND SCHOOL NAME.  
• GROUP CARDS IN 10'S & RUBBER BANDED WHEN TRADING/SWAPPING
• IF YOU ARE TRADING/SWAPPING WITH MULTIPLE SCHOOLS IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE A POINT PERSON WHO WILL BE WILLING TO RECEIVE & SEND THE CARDS BACK OUT.  THIS IS NOT TO SAY IT IS A ONE PERSON SHOW....YOU NEED TO COORDINATE A GROUP THAT WILL HELP SWAP & SEND THE WORK BACK OUT.  THE LARGER THE GROUP(MORE SCHOOLS INVOLVED) THE MORE HELP YOU WILL NEED!!!

I KEEP THE ARTIST TRADING CARDS (IN BASEBALL CARD SLEEVES) IN MY ROOM FOR STUDENTS TO LOOK AT IF THEY ARE DONE WITH THEIR WORK EARLY OR IF THEY NEED INSPIRATION/HAVE ARTIST BLOCK

 I CREATE A DISPLAY OF THE WORK WE RECEIVE & HAVE AN EXPLANATION WITH THE DISPLAY SO TEACHERS/PARENTS/STUDENTS UNDERSTAND WHAT THE PROJECT IS ALL ABOUT!

For the past several years I've participated in
Mini-Matisse's ATC Exchange.

I do it a bit different than many of the teachers.  I have my students create the cards collaboratively.  Different classes & different grades do different aspects of the cards.  That way I'm not having to stop my curriculum.  I can add it in as a center and rotate students through.  This also allows me to keep all the ATCs.  I know...totally selfish.  ha ha  I just love them so much.  I keep a big binder in my classroom with all of them so my students can look through them for inspiration if they have artist's block!

My #ATCSwap package arrived a couple days ago, but I've not had a chance to go through them and create my displays like I usually do!?!!?!?  I'm chair of the text book adoption for our district, chair of the scope and sequence team, meetings for a grant our district received, all my normal school stuff, and LIFE?!?!?!!?  AHHH....I'm always busy in the spring, but this year seems especially busy!

SNEAK PEEK: ATC2018

Here is a sneak peek at Tulip Grove Elementary's Artist Trading Cards for Mini Matisse's #ATCswap this year!!!  I'm having a hard time parting with these...some are so beautiful I want to frame them!  We do them a little different than others participating in the swap.  The past couple years I've done them as a collaborative project with different grade levels.  This year I had my kindergarten students pain the backgrounds(they were doing a tempera project...so I passed these out as they finished up).  My 2nd graders cut out leaves.  My 3rd & 4th graders cut out the flowers and did the oil pastel color on them(they both were using oil pastels in their main project for the day..so as they finished they were allowed to make the flowers).  I also had 3rd graders match up pattern paper with the painted backgrounds and add the strips onto them.

If you don't know anything about the ATC Swap...you are missing out!!  Go to her blog now & look it up.  It is such a wonderful opportunity to connect with the world...and see amazing student art from a variety of locations, teaching situations, and grade levels!! Tulip Grove Elementary created 100 ATCs collaboratively to swap this year!  In return, we received 100 cards back!  Here are the amazing works that found their way to Nashville,TN!  

I try to make it a geography lesson as well.  I include a map with each set. I mark Tennessee in red & place a dot on Nashville so they have a point of reference.  I then mark where the cards are from in yellow.  In class we discuss how far the locations are from us.  

The teachers and student linger outside my room looking at the cards & locations.
