Abstract Expressionism: 4th Grade

We kick off the lesson we watched a short TEDed Video about Abstract Expressionism (focused on Pollock mostly).  We reviewed TINTS & SHADES.  I allowed the students to select one color to go with the emotion they were trying to convey to go with the black & white.  At the end of class I allowed them to select one metallic color to add.  I think I may allow them to use oil pastels and possibly one more color of paint to finish it off.  They are really enjoying this project/process so far!

Sunday Devotional With Mr. E: Reach Out

I was one of eighty art teachers hired one summer to fill every elementary school in Nashville.  They hired us from different states.  They hired us from varied teaching backgrounds.  They hired us with and without art education degrees.  We were a ragtag group. At the end of the first year 30+ teachers left.  At the end of the second year 20+ teachers left.  What was causing this exodus of art educators.  I'm sure a number of reasons could be cited, but I believe deeply that it was because they did not reach out.  There is something extremely special about humbly going to someone else, sharing your needs, and seeking assistance.   It can be transformative.  It wasn't until teachers began feeling connected/supported that the retention rate stabilized. Education is best in community.  We were never meant to go it alone.  Art educators often work in isolation in their individual schools.  That need to develop a support system around you is incredibly important for the success, longevity, and enjoyment of one's career.  Support is more than just cheering each other on.......it is about encouraging one another to grow, calling out things that are questionable, and sharing our strengths(to meet the weaknesses we all possess). Sometimes though...it requires us to reach out.

And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her.  She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.  When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

The Christian life can not be lived "well" in isolation.  We were not designed to go it alone.  There are those that feel fellowship, accountability, and support are not necessary. They believe they are strong enough, know enough, and good enough that they don't have a need for the church or the people of the church.  I've heard many make the statement, "I don't have to go to church to believe in God!"  While this is technically true, it misses the heart of God's message to us.  The Bible is about relationships.  God's relationship to us, our relationship to God, our relationship to each other, our relationship to the world...does this sound like we can do it all by ourselves?   We may be dysfunctional at best, but God gave us this family of believers to encourage, challenge, and support one another as we grow in faith.  We must reach out and take hold of it.  Is it perfect...no.  Will we get hurt from time to time...possibly.  However, when we step out in faith....we will be amazed at what the Lord can do. 

Reach out...and believe.

Day 3 is Color Field Painting! This is the art that most people go "I don't get it?!" or "I could have done that!" ...just being real art people ..don't come at me!! Haha I'm not saying I don't like it...just saying the general public often has that reaction. #heartaday #heartaday22 #iheartart

 This is a wax resist self portrait.  I will say it looks kind of freaky right now, but we are going to go back into them.  I'm sure (I HOPE!) they will be amazing!

HAPPY FEBRUARY 1st!! 

You know what that means.....#heartaday22!!!

A laid back art challenge where you create a heart each day and post it to social media.  You can use any medium, any theme, any size....IT IS ALL UP TO YOU! If you can't do every day...that's ok.  Share your hearts as often as you are able.  I started this challenge 7 years ago because I needed some motivation and accountability to create each and every day!

More Amazing 3rd Grade Abstract Landscapes

 Here are more of the 3rd grade abstract landscapes.  I love how they are all so different! The kids really made them their own.  There are a couple I'm not sure about the landscape"ness" of their work, but they still look amazing & work well as an abstract. I have more info on this project in the first post.  Just look down a few posts & you'll see it! 

Sunday Devotional With Mr. E: Keep Going

There are many people that think art is purely a "natural" gift that few people have.  You either have it or you don't. The truth is...being an artist/creating art takes work.  If you want to be good at anything you have to put the time and effort into your "craft".  There may be times where you feel frustrated.  You might believe you'll never improve. You can quit or keep going.  Those who quit will just say they were never good at art or that they weren't an artist. Those who keep going will see their work improve over time and experience. You may hear voices around you say that your work is no good.  You may hear your own inner voice question your worth as an artist.  KEEP GOING.  Don't give up on something just because you get negative feed back, hit a plateau, or become frustrated.  KEEP GOING! 

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper

 time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9

As believers, we should be living a life that reflects Christ.  That doesn't always come "naturally". As we grow in our faith we see more of Christ in our attitudes, actions, and reactions.  We may have people question us.  We may have people put us down. People may doubt our sincerity. No matter...we must KEEP GOING.  We must realize that we are a work in progress.  When we face negativity we must approach it in self reflection.  Maybe there area things we need to change.  Maybe there are things we need to do better  Viewing our faith as an ongoing opportunity to grow will allow us to KEEP GOING knowing we are becoming more like Jesus each day we are given. 

More Amazing Kindergarten Paintings....

I had to share more of the kindergarten paintings!  I'm so impressed with their work.  It is always so amazing when the class goes silent, and the kids are so focused on their work that they are unaware of anything around them! THEY WERE IN THE ZONE!!!!!!  Check out this batch of beautiful paintings.

3rd Grade Abstract Landscapes

 We had to take some time to talk about abstract landscapes.  We looked at several different artists, and looked at how they "deconstructed" a landscape in their work.  It was an interesting discussion, and I feel a majority of my students "got it".  

THE BREAK DOWN

On Day 1 students looked at and discussed abstract landscapes.  They drew out their pictures, and used paint sticks to begin to fill them in.

On Day 2 students finished "filling in" their pictures using paint sticks.  Next they used liquid black tempera to add a thick black line around their images/colors.

 So the title of this post should be longer, but I felt it was getting a bit ridiculous. Kindergarten Wax Resist Water Color Cubist Still Life. See what I mean! ha ha  These are going to be in the running for our Abstract All School Art Show this year!  (they get to pick from several projects)
