Art Room Bulletin Boards - Discipline

I am trying a new "system" this year. With having all 530 students this year, I need to keep organized & simplistic. I have a chart with 36 boxes across(the number of times I'm suppose to see the students in a years time). At the end of the class time, I fill in the box with the color that matches their behavior for the day. Blue is a GREAT DAY! Red is OK DAY..but could be better. Yellow is NOT A GOOD DAY! I slide the color across to let the the kids know where they are at during the class time...every class starts on blue. Individual student issues will be handled individually...this chart is for class as a whole. The kids seem to like knowing if they're doing better than the other classes!

  1. I love all of your displays, especially the no-no wall! I also do a behavior chart similar to yours...I'm trying to think of a good reward...what's your plan?

  2. Well, I've tossed around the idea of a popice party at the end of the year for the classes that have the most blues in each grade level. I've also thought about a special art project to do with those groups...not sure what yet, but something outside of our normal standards for art.

  4. I kind of do the same thing as you but I use stars. I have a chart with all the classes that I teach (about 29) and the days of the week for six weeks. During that six weeks the classes has a chance to earn a star each time they come to art. I have the letters ART on the board in a drawn box. If they keep all letters in the box during that class I give the teacher a star with her/his name on it and the date(cut from a die cutter). If the class gets 3 warnings, they lose the T(but can earn it back by the end of class) and they only recieve a half star. If they get 3 more warnings they lose the R and get no star. If they lose the A,no star and next class will be silent art. I only had two classes lose the R this year and a few more to lose the T. If the class earns a star that day, I have them put their hand on their head and I stamp it as they are walking out the door. I also put a star sticker by their teacher's name for that day on the chart. I use different color stars each six weeks so I can use my chart over and over. The teachers keep their stars on their classroom doors. The class in each grade level that has the most stars at the end of each six weeks gets a big certificate to display on their door. The students and teachers get very competitive!!! I know this was long but this system has really been great for me!

  5. Ted,
I was thinking of going to a system like this for this coming school year. I've done something similar for the last two years, but I think a very visible chart will help. Hopefully it works out well!

  6. Just wondering..Do you have a system for handling individual discipline behavior problems?

  7. When you only see the kids once or twice a week...they do not get into the groove of your rooms rules...and then don't seem to care if they get in trouble cause WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?!? Well..I do classroom behavior chart. I reward the class that gets the most blues in a nine weeks grading period(you pick the reward...free choice centers...a "special" project..sign outside the door letting all the other classes know they did the best..etc). The peer pressure for getting a blue in my room seems to really help!!!!! :) ha ha In regards to individual issues...I address individually. I usually give a verbal warning first. Next I move them to a different location(still with kids..just not where they were). After that they get moved off by themselves. They still have to do their project..I see them only once a week...so I need the grades!!!! If it gets even close to that point...I get down close to the student(I'm 6'3)...and remind them.."I have your parents phone number in the office..I WILL go down and call home..do you think they will enjoy hearing about your bad behavior when I call home????" This usually works! If none of that works....then I will bother the administration to come in and deal with it. At some point...if you can document you have done all of this...administration should be willing to help. I know that is not always the case. However..if you are documenting your steps of correcting an individual student...they will see you aren't just throwin' all your troubles on them. I hope that helps some?!?! :) I know every school is so different. I am altra consistant(a little OCD actually)...so my student realize I will follow through with whatever I say.
